Sport and Exercise Sciences: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: Criminal Youth Justice System in Wales’ Alignment with Sports Providers and Identification of Readiness to Engage

This scholarship is part-funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for East Wales.

Start date: October 2021

There are various strategic areas where the sport is used as a prevention method, such as violence prevention units and in youth crime (criminal justice system). However, these initiatives vary across the different policing regions of Wales and there is not currently a comprehensive pan-Wales picture available that captures these initiatives. Importantly, these initiatives are yet to be rigorously evaluated for their effectiveness.

This research aims to (1) identify if and how sports providers and agencies are aligned with the Criminal Justice System in Wales and (2) understand the baseline “readiness factors“ of the youth justice and community sports sector in areas of referral pathways, contextual safeguarding and workforce needs. To address these aims the research will:

  • compile a database of the ways in which the Criminal Justice System is involved in Police Forces and Police and Crime Commissioners’ invested initiatives;
  • compile a database of Criminal Justice System investments in physical activity and sports initiatives to prevent and reduce crime;
  • identify factors that act as barriers and facilitating factors of Criminal Justice System readiness to align with relevant agencies and sports providers to use physical activity and sport as a tool in crime prevention and reduction (including but not only referral pathways, workforce needs, and contextual safeguarding).

Findings from the project will help shape future strategies regarding the use of sport and physical activity in the area of crime prevention in Wales.

The project will be implemented under the auspices of the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health, and Sport (WIPAHS) and in partnership with the Policing in Wales Board.

Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organizations. The scholarship provides 1-year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis.
